Setting Effective Goals and Outcomes –
SPECIFY Model
1. Sensory Specific
See – Hear –Feel and by what date?
2. Positive Language
What you want…. Not what you don’t want. Pink Elephants
3. Ecological
· What will I gain from having my goal or outcome? What will I lose?
· If there are things you’ll regret losing ask yourself “ How can I create new ways to keep what is important to me AND reach my goal?”
· What situations would you like your outcome in?
· Are there situations you don’t want your outcome in?
4. Choice Increases
How can this outcome increase my life choices?
5. Initiated by Self
What do you personally need to achieve this?
6. First Step identified
What first small step can I take in the next 24 hours?
7. Your Resources Identified
External – time – money – specific people to support you
Internal – Feelings which support your goal being achieved
Confidence/ passion/ excitement or security?
