Are you an Addict?

A lot of people are and they never know it....

What am I going on about? I'm talking about a highly addictive substance we can all access anytime, anywhere. WE are the 'dealers, the pushers and the takers'.

Emotions... plain and simple. Emotions can be highly addictive. Have you ever met someone who is perpetually falling in love? Or someone who is often low and perhaps depressed? Or even someone who is mostly happy and upbeat?

Emotions are an amazing medium through which we can experience life, its ups and its downs. But not all emotions serve us, or allow us to get what we all really want out of life.
Some examples of un-resourceful emotions include:

Anger - Rage - Depression- Guilt- Anxiety or worry- Lack- Hopelessness - Worthlessness- Grief - Struggle - Resentment.

I used to be an addict. Several years back I was flowing in and out of mild depression and a sense of anxiety. When my family would tell me to "snap out of it"
I'd get angry... it was "my emotion and I'll have it thank you very much" I thought.

As time went on I met, as you do, teachers and mentors who enlightened my sense of awareness. Whether they were books, people or major experiences the process took a while to truly make me acknowledge my weakness, my addiction.

People rely on certain emotions (Negative in particular) for several reasons;

  1. Certainty or Familiarity "I like what's familiar"
  2. Drama - "Excitement - bring it on!"
  3. Identity - "I'm unique and I'd like attention now please"
  4. Love - "people care for me when I'm in a bad place"

Each of these are powerful Crack Cocaine level rewards, though its usually a combination of these "rewards" which provides "the best hit".

Take a moment now,

when do you feel dis-empowered or feel like you're going in circles quickly?

And whats the pay off?

Write it down. Become aware.

To quote a wise man .....(Dr Phil. C. Mcgraw)

"You can't change,what you can't acknowledge... "
