What do you want?

I ask this question every time I meet somebody for the first time, whether we're training or in a coaching relationship,

"What do you want?"

The question, and it's answer has importance beyond anything else in our lives. It is the reason, drive and destination for our lives existing. I don't know about you but a lot of people understand what it means to NOT get what you want.

Frustration, anger, helplessness, upset, letdown, depressed, and PAIN... that's what happens when you're not getting what you want.

What can you want?

You can want anything - it is not limited to a physical object - it can be an emotion or inner state, a behaviour or a positive outcome in your situation or others'.

Believe it or not, many people when asked "what do you want?" Experience shows somewhere in the region of 60% or more reply "I don't know!"

So how do you discover what you want?!

OK - lets approach it from a different perspective -

  • What would you want if you knew you couldn't fail?

  • What would you want if you didn't have to be unhappy about getting it?

  • If a miracle occurred tonight, how would you know it had come true when you woke up? What would you see.... hear.... feel.... and believe to know the miracle had happened?

  • If knew it was OK to fail, what would you want?

People often have different fears associated with thinking about what they want because of social conditioning, upbringing, religion and beliefs. Sometimes 'suspending' or putting those beliefs to the side for a moment can allow for human mind to create or re-create goals, dreams or desires.

So, write down.....What do you want?
